History and Mission

Fuel for Humanity is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, originally created as the philanthropic arm of Fuel Digital. Employees of Fuel, a small, New York-based advertising production boutique, wanted to balance the hours spent on business with time spent helping the community. It began with the simple idea to charge for the coffee from the office coffee pot and give it to a worthy cause.. We collected enough to give a few hundred dollars to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and later to City Harvest, a local food bank.

These modest first steps led to a new charity with the tongue-in-cheek name "Fuel for Humanity". We decided to focus on providing opportunities for young people through technology and education.

Soon after, we took a trip to Chinandega, Nicaragua to see the dire living conditions of families eking out a living at the local dump. We were inspired by heroic efforts being made by Italian missionary Father Marco and the Humble (Texas) Rotary Club. (more)

The trip galvanized our newly defined direction, to promote education and opportunities for children via technology. We saw a perfect fit between our expertise and resources, and the basic needs being provided by other organizations.

Today, Fuel for Humanity maintains a classroom that offers computer studies and digital photography classes in Nicaragua, and funds college scholarships for its graduates. In the future, Fuel for Humanity will examine other groups, communities or organizations in need, using the following criteria:

  • Primary beneficiaries are children and young adults
  • Students urgently need educational assistance
  • Schools and communities lack access to computers and the Internet
  • There is a gap in intellectual and creative growth opportunities (previous)
